About

Idle & Awake Time is a calm, fast world clock. A globe lit by the real sun, analog clocks for the world’s major cities, local time in 150 cities, and simple tools for the questions people actually ask: what time is it there, when can we meet, and how far is it?

Why this site exists

Time zone sites tend to be either very plain or covered in ads and pop-ups. We wanted something in between: one screen that shows the whole world at a glance, pages that answer the follow-up questions (sunrise, daylight saving, the best time to call), and a few fun calculations — like how long it would take to walk from Seoul to New York.

Who we are

Idle & Awake Time is part of Idle & Awake, a small independent family of sites that make everyday things a little clearer — time here, handy calculators and converters on Tools, and evidence-based reading on Essays.

How it works

Time zones: every time is calculated in your browser from the IANA time zone database built into it, so daylight saving changes are applied automatically and nothing about you is sent to a server.
Cities: names, coordinates and populations come from GeoNames (CC BY 4.0).
Sun: sunrise, sunset and day length use the NOAA solar position formulas.

Money and independence

The site is free and supported by display advertising (Google AdSense) and a few Amazon affiliate links to clocks, timers and travel gear that fit the page you’re on. Ads are never placed inside the clocks or the globe. See our affiliate disclosure.
